Carmel Loves Your Dog
Off-leash beaches, dog menus, pet-friendly hotels, and shops that keep a water bowl at the door. This is dog paradise.
Carmel Beach β Off-Leash Freedom
Carmel Beach is one of the only public beaches in California where dogs are allowed off-leash, all year, any time of day. The powdery white sand stretches a full mile, backed by ancient Monterey cypress trees β your dog will think they've died and gone to heaven.
The beach sits at the foot of Ocean Avenue. There's easy street parking nearby, and several staircase access points along Scenic Road. Bring fresh water β the ocean water isn't safe for dogs to drink in large quantities.
- Off-leash allowed all day, all year
- Bring bags β the town takes cleanliness seriously
- Dogs swim in the surf regularly β fun but watch the currents
- Nearest parking: Scenic Road and 8th Ave

Tips for Dog-Friendly Shopping
- Most galleries and boutiques welcome small-to-medium dogs on a leash β always ask first
- Carmel has no numbered addresses β shops are identified by cross streets (e.g. "Ocean and Mission")
- The Carmel Plaza outdoor mall is fully dog-friendly in the common areas
- Weekday mornings are best for a calm stroll with your dog β weekends get busy
