Things To Do in Carmel

Beaches, art, wine, world-famous drives, and coastal hikes — Carmel packs more into one square mile than most cities do in a hundred.

Carmel Beach

The iconic white-sand beach at the foot of Ocean Avenue is arguably the most beautiful in California. The powdery pale sand, backed by gnarled Monterey cypress trees and turquoise water, looks almost Mediterranean.

Swimming is possible but the water is cold (55–60°F year-round) and the surf can be strong. Most visitors come to walk, watch the waves, and let their dogs run free — this is one of the few off-leash beaches in California.

  • Free public access — no parking fee at the beach itself
  • Dogs allowed off-leash year-round
  • Best sunset views in the entire Monterey area
  • Bonfire pits available on a first-come basis in designated areas

Point Lobos State Reserve

Point Lobos State Reserve

Robert Louis Stevenson called it "the greatest meeting of land and water in the world." Two miles south of Carmel, this breathtaking reserve protects rugged granite headlands, emerald coves, kelp forests, and sea lion colonies.

The reserve has 13 miles of trails ranging from easy coastal walks to more strenuous ridge hikes. Bring binoculars — harbor seals, sea otters, and migrating whales are commonly spotted from the trails.

Tips: Arrive early (opens at 8am) — it fills up fast on weekends. $10/vehicle day use fee. Reserve entry in advance at reservecalifornia.com during peak season.
